For a while now I’ve been wanting to write a series about all the cool places
we visit. On Google Maps, I have a list of restaurants, fun local spots, etc that I call Jenni’s Joints. These are places in each city that we have visited that I really enjoyed and want to let others know about. Maybe these reviews will help you!
We’re starting in Key West. Why? Because we love Key West and it’s a whole ass vibe and this is my blog so I can write whatever I want whenever I want, lol!
Let’s start with my favorite sandwich shop, Little Whitehouse Subs.
Anyone who knows me knows that I have always been on the hunt for the perfect Italian Sub. Whether you call them grinders, hoagies, or subs, sandwiches are probably my favorite meal ever…and if it’s an Italian, I’m in love. So when I heard that Little Whitehouse Subs had “hands down the best Italian sub you’ll ever have in your life” I had to try it.
Walking up to this shop, located next to the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum, I wasn’t expecting a lot. It’s tucked away in a tiny strip mall type building. Now I had passed this building several times when training for my job as a haunted history tour guide. In fact, my boss, quoted above, was the one who said that I *had* to stop in and grab The Balboa.
The Balboa, aka The Italian Stallion, has capocollo, Genoa salmi, pepperoni, ham, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, banana pepper, red pepper relish, and their house oil & vinegar served on a sub roll. The service is fast, and you can sit outside and people watch.
The first time we stopped by, I sat outside with the dog while Kenny went inside and ordered for us. One of the employees brought us out the sandwiches. I, obviously, got The Balboa, and Kenny got…something else. (I honestly don’t remember, and this is my blog, so we’re just gonna talk about the AMAZING Italian sub I had, lol!)
For this first sub, I also tried their pasta salad instead of chips. The salad was good, but a little dry. It had great flavor, just needed a bit more oil/vinegar. But the sub…oh baby was that sub worth the walk and the calories. I think I got halfway through the sandwich before I came up for air.
That first bite had the perfect blend of meats, veggies, and dressing. The banana peppers and red pepper relish added that perfect tang and a tiny bit of heat. The ratios were spot on. Seriously, I’m always looking for the perfect bite and this was it. The crunch of the veggies, the softness of the bread, and the savory meats all blended together with just enough oil and vinegar to make it moist but not wet…I was smitten. I knew that this wouldn’t be the only time I would eat this sandwich. (And it definitely wasn’t!!)
I don’t think I ever ended up trying another sandwich from Little Whitehouse Subs. I know Kenny tried a few and honestly, I have no idea what they were, but if they were half as good as The Balboa, then they were worth it.
